SHEIN Coats and Jackets (2026): Which Ones Are Actually Warm

Late October is when people realise their winter coat is a size too small, a season too old, or not as warm as they remembered. SHEIN’s outerwear section is enormous and cheap, and a puffer at a fraction of the high-street price is tempting.

Reviews of SHEIN coats are mostly positive, but they come mainly from social posts and buying guides rather than independent tests. So this guide sorts by type, because the type of coat predicts warmth better than the price or the photo does.

Quick answer: SHEIN puffers and padded coats get the best warmth-for-price reviews and suit mild to moderately cold weather. Faux-leather jackets are fashion pieces, not warm ones. Wool-look coats shed fibre and rarely contain much real wool. For anything near freezing, plan to layer underneath. Try the coat on over a thick sweater the day it arrives, with tags still attached, because a coat you’ve worn outside can’t be returned.

Warmth by coat type

Coat type Warmth Durability and care
Puffer / padded Best for the price; mild to moderately cold weather Compresses after washing; fine for a season or two
Faux fur / teddy Warm, especially with a big collar Sheds and mats; spot-clean
Wool-look / wool-blend Moderate Sheds fibre; hang, don’t fold
Faux leather (PU) Low; wind-blocking only Can crack or peel; the weakest on durability
Lightweight shell / trench Low; needs layers Okay for wind and rain

The temperature ranges you’ll see quoted are rough. Reviewers describe SHEIN puffers as suited to mild or moderately cold weather and not to long stretches below freezing, and one shopper who got through a trip at -10 to 5°C did it by layering SHEIN pieces underneath. The listing rarely states the fill weight or a temperature rating, so there’s no number to hold the coat to.

What the listing can and can’t tell you

  • Lining and padding. Look for “padded” or “thermal” in the details, then check the composition. A puffer with a polyester shell and polyester fill is normal at this price.
  • Faux leather means PU. It’s polyurethane on a fabric backing. It blocks wind but doesn’t insulate, and cheap PU can crack or peel after a season. CBC’s 2021 tests also flagged a SHEIN PU toddler coat for lead, which is why I’d be wary of coated children’s outerwear in particular. See my SHEIN kids’ clothing guide.
  • “Wool” in the title. Read the percentage. Reviewers say wool-look coats tend to shed fibre, and a coat with 20% wool and the rest polyester behaves like polyester.
  • Length and hood. A longer coat with a hood is warmer than a cropped one of the same fabric, and cropped styles are the main fashion trap.

Sizing a coat you’ll layer under

Outerwear is where “between sizes” matters most. Measure over the thickest sweater you’d wear under it: chest, shoulder width, and arm length from shoulder to wrist with the elbow slightly bent. Then compare the figures with the listing’s chart in centimetres, as the SHEIN sizing guide explains. If you’re between sizes, size up, since a tight puffer compresses its insulation against you and loses warmth, and padded sleeves restrict reaching.

On arrival, try it on over that sweater indoors, keeping the tags on. Reach forward and up, sit down, and zip it to the top. If it pulls at the shoulders or the sleeves ride up, send it back while you still can.

Making a cheap coat last

  • Check the care field first. Some puffers are machine-washable and some are dry-clean only.
  • If you do wash a puffer, use a gentle cycle and a low-heat dryer with a couple of clean tennis balls, which break up clumped filling. Reviewers report that puffers compress badly after washing, so do it as rarely as you can.
  • Hang wool-look coats rather than folding them, and brush off shed fibre with a lint roller.
  • Don’t store faux leather folded; creases crack.

Returns and timing

Coats follow the standard clothing rules: 30 days from delivery, unworn, unwashed, undamaged and with tags attached. The first return from an order is free, and a second return from the same order has a $6.99 fee deducted from the refund. Order before the first cold snap rather than after it, because delivery estimates stretch in busy periods; the SHEIN shipping times explains why, and the SHEIN import charges covers how duties are now shown at checkout. If you’re also buying knitwear to go under it, see my SHEIN sweaters guide and read the SHEIN returns policy.

Frequently asked questions

Are SHEIN puffer coats warm?

Reviewers describe them as warm for the price and good for mild to moderately cold weather, with layering needed in a hard freeze. The listing rarely gives a temperature rating.

Are SHEIN faux leather jackets warm?

Not really. They block wind but don't insulate, and are generally treated as fashion pieces. Cheaper PU can crack or peel after a season.

How should I size a SHEIN coat?

Measure over the thickest layer you'll wear under it, compare with the listing's chart in centimetres, and size up if you're between sizes.

Can I wash a SHEIN puffer?

Check the care field. If it's machine-washable, use a gentle cycle and dry on low with clean tennis balls. Reviewers say puffers can compress after washing, so keep washes rare.

Can I return a SHEIN coat?

Yes, within 30 days of delivery if it's unworn, unwashed and has its tags. The first return is free and later returns from the same order cost $6.99.

The short version

For the price, a SHEIN puffer or padded coat is a reasonable bet for mild to moderately cold winters. Faux leather and wool-look coats are fashion pieces. Size for layering, try it on indoors with the tags on, and keep washing to a minimum. You can look through the current range on SHEIN.
