Nearly every complaint about SHEIN comes back to fit. The dress that arrived two sizes small, the jeans that would not close, the top that fitted like a crop. The frustrating part is that this is avoidable, because SHEIN publishes the exact garment measurements for almost every item it sells. Most shoppers never open that table, and pick the letter size they wear at home instead.
Quick answer: SHEIN has no single house size. Each listing carries its own measurement chart, because items come from many different suppliers. Take your bust, waist, hip and inseam measurements once, then compare them to the chart on that specific product page. When you fall between sizes in a woven fabric with no stretch, size up.
Why SHEIN sizing feels random
It feels random because it is not one sizing system. SHEIN lists products from a very large supplier base, and each supplier cuts to its own pattern. A size M dress and a size M blouse on the same site can be built to different measurements, so a size that fitted last month tells you very little about the next order.
There is a second trap. The tables on the product page usually give garment measurements rather than body measurements. A chart showing a 34 inch bust means the garment measures 34 inches around, not that it fits a 34 inch bust comfortably. For anything fitted and non-stretch, you want two to four inches of difference between your body measurement and the garment measurement, which is the ease that lets you move.
The four numbers to take once
Take these with a soft tape, wearing normal underwear, and write them down in both inches and centimetres. SHEIN charts switch between the two, and converting in your head at 1am is how mistakes happen.
One measurement most people skip is the inseam, and it is the one that ruins trousers. SHEIN lists inseam separately from waist, so a pair can fit at the waist and still finish three inches above your ankle. Measure from the crotch seam of a pair of trousers you already like, rather than from your leg, and use that number as the target.
Reading the chart on a listing
According to SHEIN’s published size guides, every product page carries its own table, reached from the size guide link next to the size selector. Open it before you choose. Three things decide whether the number you see is workable.
- Fabric composition. The listing states it. Anything with 3% or more elastane will forgive a close fit. A 100% polyester woven will not forgive anything.
- The gap between your measurement and the garment measurement. Aim for two to four inches of ease on woven tops and dresses, and roughly one to two on jersey.
- Which measurement matters for that category. Bust decides dresses and tops, waist decides trousers, and foot length in centimetres decides shoes. Optimising for the wrong one is the most common error.
The review section is the real size guide
SHEIN’s most useful feature is buried at the bottom of the listing. Buyers upload photos alongside their height, weight and the size they bought, and reviewers report whether an item ran small, large or true to size. That data is item-specific, which is exactly what a global size chart cannot give you.
Filter the reviews for people within an inch or two of your own height and build, look at what size they ordered, and follow them. Two minutes of that beats any amount of guessing. Where an item has almost no reviews, treat it as unproven and either skip it or size up.
The categories where a mistake is permanent
Getting a size wrong on a dress is annoying. Getting it wrong on swimwear or a bodysuit is expensive, because those categories cannot be returned at all. “Bodysuits, lingerie, underwear, jewelry, accessories, cosmetics, pet products, clearance items and any other final sale items,” writes SHEIN in its list of non-returnable goods, and the hygiene rules behind that list are not negotiable.
For everything that is returnable, the condition rules are strict. “Items must be returned in new, unworn, unwashed, undamaged, and unaltered condition and have the original tags attached and the hygiene sticker (if applicable) intact,” writes SHEIN in its US return policy. That means trying things on carefully, over your own underwear, with the tags still on, before anything goes in the wash.
If it still does not fit
According to SHEIN’s US return policy, you have 30 days from the delivery date to return most items, and the first return from any order is free. A $6.99 fee comes out of your refund for the second and any later return from that same order, which is worth knowing if you were planning to order three sizes and send two back. Order the size the chart says, not a spread of sizes.
