SHEIN Halloween Costumes (2026): Will It Arrive in Time, and Is It Any Good?

Disclosure: This is an independent guide. Some links below are affiliate links, which means we may earn a small commission if you buy through them, at no extra cost to you. It never changes our recommendations.

SHEIN’s Halloween section goes up in September and it’s very cheap: full costumes, wigs, headbands, tights and a lot of black lace. The question that matters in the first week of October isn’t whether the costume looks good in the photos. It’s whether it will land before the thirty-first, and whether you can send it back if it doesn’t work.

So this guide is about timing, about what you can’t return, and about the three or four points of common sense that apply to wigs, make-up and fabric around candles.

Quick answer: If you’re ordering in early October, choose items marked Local (shipped from a US warehouse), avoid pre-orders, and leave at least two to three weeks. SHEIN’s own data puts about 77% of standard orders at seven business days or fewer, and that still leaves roughly one in four later. Clothing can be returned within 30 days if unworn and unwashed, but accessories and cosmetics can’t be returned at all. Treat wigs, hats, face paint and costume jewellery as final-sale.

How much time to allow

SHEIN ships most of its products from overseas warehouses, which adds processing, customs and carrier legs to the journey. The delivery estimate at checkout is calculated from historical orders, and the company says openly that it isn’t a promise. SHEIN has published an on-time rate of about 77% for standard orders within seven business days, which means a quarter of parcels take longer.

That has three practical consequences for a deadline:

  • Order two to three weeks ahead. SHEIN’s own seasonal advice is to shop in September or early October, and it gives no cut-off date. If your event is the thirty-first and you’re ordering on the fourth, you’re inside the safe zone but not by much.
  • Filter for Local items. Items marked “Local” ship from a US warehouse, which skips the international leg. If one isn’t available locally it ships from abroad and takes longer.
  • Don’t mix pre-orders into the basket. The whole order waits for the slowest item. Order the costume separately from anything marked pre-order or customised.

I covered the thresholds and the estimates in the SHEIN shipping times, and the SHEIN money-saving guide explains why the free-shipping line matters more than a coupon on an order this size.

Packaged costume or separates?

Whole costumes come in a bag, and the bag is where the cost-saving shows. Reviews are patchy: some shoppers are surprised at the quality for around $30, including the wig, and others report roughly a coin-flip on whether SHEIN pieces fit or look as pictured.

The more reliable route, in my view, is to build the look from separates. A black dress, striped tights, a hat and a cape or cardigan will be a witch, a cat, a pirate or a vampire’s date, and everything except the hat is wearable the other 364 days of the year. It also lets you read the review photos of individual items rather than one costume with six parts.

What you can and can’t send back

Item type Returnable? Notes
Dresses, tops, capes, tights Yes, within 30 days Unworn, unwashed, tags on, hygiene sticker intact where there is one
Hats, headbands, wigs, gloves No (accessories) Check the product page for the exclusion before you order
Costume jewellery No Jewellery is on the non-returnable list
Face paint and make-up No Cosmetics are not returnable
Pre-ordered or customised items Customised items can’t be cancelled Slows the whole order

The upshot: if you want the option to return, put clothing in the basket and hold accessories to a size you’re certain of. And remember “unworn” means unworn. A costume worn to a party can’t be returned. My SHEIN returns policy has the full list.

Wigs, face paint and costume lenses

  • Wigs. Cheap synthetic wigs are usually stiff and tangle-prone, and fit varies a lot. Check the head-circumference measurement in the listing. If it comes crushed in a bag, hang it for a day and brush it gently from the ends upward.
  • Face paint and make-up. Cosmetics aren’t returnable, so a skin reaction is your problem. Patch-test a small dab on the inside of your forearm a day beforehand, and avoid anything near the eyes unless the pack says it’s made for that. Check for an ingredients list.
  • Costume contact lenses. Skip these from any online shop. In the US they’re regulated as medical devices and need a prescription, and the FDA warns about the eye injuries from non-prescription ones.
  • Fabric and flame. Clothing sold in the US has to meet federal flammability rules, but a synthetic cape and a real candle in a pumpkin is still a bad pairing. Use LED tea lights.

If it arrives late or wrong

If the parcel hasn’t turned up and the date has passed, use the steps in my guide on what to do when a SHEIN package doesn’t arrive. If you’re still waiting, build a backup from the clothes you already own. Whatever happens, don’t plan the whole evening around a SHEIN parcel arriving on a specific day.

Frequently asked questions

How long does SHEIN take to deliver Halloween costumes?

SHEIN reports about 77% of standard orders arriving within seven business days, so allow two to three weeks to be safe. Items marked Local ship from a US warehouse and are usually faster.

Can I return a SHEIN Halloween costume?

Clothing can be returned within 30 days if it's new, unworn, unwashed and has its tags. Accessories, cosmetics and costume jewellery can't be returned. A costume you've worn to an event isn't returnable.

Are SHEIN Halloween costumes good quality?

Reviews are mixed. Some shoppers are pleasantly surprised for about $30, while others describe hit-or-miss fit and quality. Reading review photos of the specific item helps most.

Is it safe to use face paint from SHEIN?

Patch-test any new cosmetic on your forearm a day before. Cosmetics can't be returned, so check the ingredients list and don't use it near your eyes unless it says it's designed for that.

Are costumes flame-resistant?

Clothing sold in the US has to meet federal flammability standards, but synthetic fabrics and open flames are still a risk. Use battery-powered tea lights instead of candles.

The short version

For a Halloween costume from SHEIN, order early, choose Local items, avoid pre-orders, and build from separates so most of what you buy is returnable and re-wearable. Keep wigs, make-up and accessories to a size and shade you’re sure of, because none of them can go back. You can look through the current range on SHEIN.
