Activewear is the category where SHEIN’s prices look the hardest to believe, and it’s also where the listing and the garment can end up furthest apart. A pair of leggings at a price that would barely cover the shipping on a big-name pair either turns out to be a decent basic or becomes a pair you only wear to take the bins out.
I went through SHEIN’s own return terms, how its product pages describe fabric, and the reviews and try-on write-ups from people who’ve bought activewear there, to work out what’s worth checking before you add anything to the basket. The short version is that the fabric label and one simple test tell you most of what you need.
Quick answer: SHEIN leggings and tops can be fine for the gym, yoga and everyday wear, but quality varies item by item, so judge each listing on its own. Check three things: the composition (nylon or polyester blended with spandex, and a decent share of the spandex), the size chart in centimetres, and recent review photos taken in daylight. When the parcel arrives, do the stretch-to-light test before you wash or wear anything, because worn or washed clothes can’t go back. Most clothing can be returned within 30 days of delivery, but bodysuits, underwear and lingerie can’t.
What the fabric label actually tells you
Almost every SHEIN listing shows a composition line under Description or Product Details, and for activewear it’s the most useful single field. Polyester and nylon are the standard fibres in athletic clothing at every price level, because both wick moisture and stretch well, so the material alone doesn’t mark a SHEIN pair out as worse than a mid-range brand. The mix is what matters.
| Composition on the listing | What it usually means | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Nylon + spandex | Dense, smooth, soft hand; tends to stay opaque better | Yoga, gym, everyday leggings |
| Polyester + spandex | The common budget mix; wicks sweat, can feel slicker or more plasticky | Running, HIIT, bike shorts |
| Cotton or viscose blend | Soft but loose recovery; bags at knees and seat | Lounging, walking, low-impact |
| 100% polyester, no spandex | No stretch, so not a legging in the athletic sense | Joggers, wide-leg pants |
Spandex (sometimes labelled elastane) is the fibre that gives leggings their snap-back. As a rough rule of thumb used by plenty of reviewers rather than anything official, leggings meant for squats and runs need a clear dose of it, while pieces with only a few percent tend to bag at the knees after a few wears. If a listing says “no stretch” or shows 100% polyester, it isn’t a legging in the athletic sense, whatever the photo suggests.
SHEIN also has its own activewear label, GLOWMODE, whose fabric reviewers describe as soft and smooth. The same write-ups say its sizing can land between two sizes, which leads neatly into the next point.
Sizing: why reviewers disagree
If you read ten reviews of SHEIN leggings you’ll find some people saying they fit perfectly and others saying they had to size up. Both are probably telling the truth. SHEIN’s size charts are per listing, so the same label on two pairs of leggings can mean different measurements. The most common advice is to size up for high-waisted styles, and to check each item’s own chart rather than assuming your usual size. Sports bras show the biggest swing: some run snug, others loose, depending on style and fabric.
Take three measurements once (natural waist, fullest part of the hips, and inseam from crotch to ankle), write them down in centimetres, and compare them to the chart on the page. My earlier SHEIN sizing guide goes through how to read the chart in more detail.
The stretch-to-light test
The single biggest complaint about cheap leggings is that they turn see-through when you bend. You can check for that in under a minute, and you should do it the moment the parcel arrives, while the tags are still on and the item is unworn and unwashed.

Hold the fabric taut between your hands, as in the photo, and stand in front of a window. If the knit opens up so much that you can clearly see the light and your skin tone through it, it will do the same over your hips and glutes. A good pair stays dark and even. Do it again over a contrasting colour (your palm works) to check for a pale patch. Most listings include a Sheer field, but treat that as a claim. The better check is review photos taken in daylight, sorted to show the lowest ratings first.
Reviewers also say the thicker, more substantial leggings tend to survive longer than the thin ones, which fits what you’d expect: more fabric, more wear.
What’s worth buying here, and what isn’t
- Basic full-length leggings and bike shorts in a dense knit. This is where the best reviews come from, and where the cost per wear is hardest to beat.
- Lounge and walking pieces. Cotton-blend and viscose-blend sets don’t need to hold you in, so the weaknesses of a budget fabric matter less.
- Light-support sports tops. Fine for yoga or the gym. Reviewers note that many have little real support, and for running or high-impact classes I’d buy a bra from a dedicated sportswear brand and save SHEIN for everything else.
- Anything with a lot of cut-outs, scrunch panels and seams. More seams means more places for a cheap pair to fail, and complex designs are the ones most likely to look different in person from the listing photo.
The gap between product photo and real garment is a common theme in reviews. That’s another reason to read the customer photos and to look at the fabric and sheer fields before the model shots.
Washing them so they last
Most listings carry a Care Instructions field, so read it first. In general, activewear lasts longer if you wash it inside out in a mesh bag on a cool cycle, skip fabric softener (it coats the fibres and works against moisture-wicking), and air dry instead of using a hot dryer. Heat is the thing that kills spandex.

Returns, in one paragraph
Most clothing, including leggings and tops, can be returned within 30 days of delivery if it’s new, unworn, unwashed and still has its tags, and the hygiene sticker intact where one applies. The first return from an order is free; the second and any later return from the same order has a $6.99 fee deducted. Bodysuits, underwear and lingerie are on the non-returnable list, and sports bras sometimes sit in the Underwear category, so look for the exclusion on the product page before ordering one. Full rules are in my SHEIN returns policy.
Frequently asked questions
Are SHEIN leggings see-through?
Some are and some aren't. It depends on the individual pair rather than the brand. Check the composition and Sheer field on the listing, look at daylight review photos, and do the stretch-to-light test when the parcel arrives, before washing or wearing.
Do SHEIN leggings run small?
Reviewers disagree. Many suggest sizing up for high-waisted styles, and the GLOWMODE line is described as falling between sizes. Compare your waist, hip and inseam measurements in centimetres with the chart on that listing instead of relying on your usual letter size.
What fabric is best for SHEIN leggings?
Nylon with spandex tends to be smoother and denser, and polyester with spandex is the more common budget option. Both are standard athletic fibres. Avoid listings with no stretch or only a tiny share of spandex if you want leggings for exercise.
Can I return SHEIN activewear after trying it on?
Yes, if it's unworn, unwashed, undamaged and has its tags and hygiene sticker. Trying it on indoors is fine, but sweating in it or washing it isn't. Bodysuits, underwear and lingerie can't be returned at all.
How should I wash SHEIN activewear?
Follow the care field on the listing. As general practice, wash inside out on a cool cycle in a mesh bag, avoid fabric softener and hang it to dry rather than using a hot dryer.
The short version
SHEIN activewear is worth a try for leggings, bike shorts, lounge pieces and light-support tops, as long as you read the composition, measure yourself in centimetres and do the stretch-to-light test before you wash anything. Skip it for high-impact support. Return anything that fails within 30 days, and do it in one go to keep the free return. You can look through the current range on SHEIN.
