SHEIN’s return policy is more generous than its reputation suggests and stricter than most shoppers assume. The first return from any order costs nothing. The second one from that same order costs $6.99. And a long list of categories cannot come back at all, which is the detail that turns a $40 haul into a $40 lesson.
Quick answer: Most SHEIN items can be returned within 30 days of the delivery date. The first return from an order is free; a $6.99 fee is deducted from your refund for the second and any later return from that same order. Bodysuits, lingerie, underwear, jewellery, accessories, cosmetics, pet products, free gifts, customised items and clearance goods cannot be returned. Refunds typically take two to four weeks end to end.
The window, and the fee that surprises people
According to SHEIN’s US return policy, most items sold on shein.com may be returned within 30 days from the delivery date, with exceptions listed below. Items sold by third-party sellers on the Marketplace can carry a longer or shorter window, and that window is shown on the product page and in your order history.
The fee structure is where haul shoppers get caught. Returns are free for your first return of one or more eligible items from any order, which means you can send back six items in one go at no cost. Go back a second time from that same order and the rule changes: “For the second and any subsequent returns from the same order, a shipping fee of 6.99 USD will be deducted from your refund,” writes SHEIN. Decide everything in one session, then return once.
There is also a Fair Use Returns Policy sitting behind all of this. Accounts that return an unusual proportion of what they order can lose access to free return labels, so treating the policy as an unlimited try-on service is a strategy with an expiry date.
What you can never send back
The non-returnable list covers bodysuits, lingerie, underwear, jewellery, accessories, cosmetics, pet products, clearance items and anything else flagged as final sale on the product page, plus free gifts and customised items. Customised items also cannot be cancelled after ordering.
Check this before you add to basket rather than after delivery, because the product page is where the exclusion appears. A swimsuit that does not fit is not a return, it is a donation.
Condition rules by category
Eligible items still have to arrive back in sellable condition, and SHEIN is specific about what that means.
- Clothing, including formalwear and wedding dresses. New, unworn, unwashed, undamaged and unaltered, with original tags attached and the hygiene sticker intact where one applies.
- Shoes, bags and luggage. Unworn and undamaged, in the original branded box, with every accessory including shoelaces, buckles and dust bags. Shoes must have been tried on a soft, clean surface only.
- Electronics. Unused, unactivated and in the original packaging. If a device arrived damaged or failed within 30 days, return it postmarked within that window with all manuals and parts, and erase any personal data first.
- Furniture and everything else. Unused and unaltered, in the original packaging with all parts and manuals.
How to start a return
Everything happens inside your account: sign in, open My Orders, find the order, click Order Details, then Return Item. Select the items, give a reason, choose a return method and a refund method, and submit. SHEIN also supports combined returns, so items from more than one order can travel in a single package.
Three return methods exist in the US. Happy Returns store drop-off and USPS store drop-off both work from a QR code with no printer needed. USPS also accepts a printed return label. Self-return means using any courier you like and paying that courier yourself, which is only worth doing when the other options are unavailable.
One exception is worth flagging. Oversized or overweight items, and returns from remote areas, may require you to arrange and pay for shipping upfront, then claim reimbursement after the item passes inspection. Keep the proof of postage in that case.
How long the refund actually takes
SHEIN publishes the stages, and adding them up is more useful than any single number. Return shipment takes five to seven days. Receipt and warehouse quality check takes another five to seven. SHEIN then issues the refund in about a day, and your bank posts it in one to ten business days. Realistically, plan for two to four weeks between dropping the parcel off and seeing the money.
You choose whether the refund goes to your original payment method or to your SHEIN Wallet. Wallet credit lands faster because it skips the bank leg, but it locks the money into the platform. One thing does not come back either way: “The original shipping fee, if any, is non-refundable,” says SHEIN.
Faulty and damaged items are a different process
If an item arrives broken or defective, do not use the standard return flow first. According to SHEIN’s US return policy, you should contact customer service within 90 days from the order date, and the company will investigate and offer a solution including a refund where appropriate. That 90-day window is three times longer than the ordinary return period, so a fault you discover in week six is still covered.
