SHEIN and Temu get lumped together constantly, usually by people who have not bought from either. They arrive in similar polybags, they advertise in the same feeds, and they were both built on the same customs loophole. But they are not the same kind of business, and the difference decides which one you should be using.
The short framing that holds up: SHEIN is a vertically integrated clothing brand with a marketplace bolted on. Temu is a marketplace with no clothing brand underneath it.
Quick answer: Buy clothing on SHEIN and almost everything else on Temu. SHEIN designs and commissions most of its own apparel in small batches, which makes sizing and quality more predictable within a category and gives you a real measurement chart to work from. Temu lists third-party sellers across 200-plus categories, which is excellent for cheap homeware, tools and gadgets and unreliable for garments, because two orders from one listing can be two different products. On price, Temu usually wins the single item; SHEIN usually wins the basket, once shipping and returns are counted.
The structural difference that explains everything else
SHEIN runs on small-batch production. A style goes into a run of roughly 100 to 200 units, gets pushed to the app, and either sells or doesn’t. Winners get reordered, losers quietly vanish. The system exists to keep unsold inventory near zero, and the side effect is that quality varies between production batches of the same garment — the factory that made your size may not be the one that made the review photos.
Temu inherited its model from Pinduoduo: onboard enormous numbers of independent sellers, subsidise the prices hard, and let volume sort out the rest. The listings are aggregated, so the photo you are looking at may belong to a different supplier than the one who fulfils you.
That single difference explains the sizing, the returns, the tracking and most of the complaints about both platforms.
Price, once you count the whole basket
Temu takes the single-item comparison more often than not. It leans harder on discounting, and its free standard shipping has no minimum in most markets, so a $4 item is genuinely a $4 item.
SHEIN charges for shipping under its threshold and then stops charging entirely above it. Standard delivery is free over $29 in the US, and over $15 on Sundays and Thursdays, which is the single most reliable saving on the site and one almost nobody uses deliberately. Below the threshold, standard shipping runs $3.99.
So the honest comparison depends on how you shop. One item: Temu. A basket of six garments: SHEIN, because the shipping goes to zero and the returns are handled in one parcel rather than six conversations with six sellers.
Both platforms have repriced since the duty change — the de minimis exemption that made $9 air-freighted dresses viable was suspended in 2025 — and prices across the category are meaningfully higher than they were two years ago. Clothing: not a close contest
For garments, SHEIN is the better platform, and not by a small margin.
The reason is boring and practical: SHEIN publishes a per-item measurement chart with actual centimetres, and because it commissioned the garment, that chart usually corresponds to the thing in the bag. SHEIN sizing still runs small against US sizing — plan to size up, and read our sizing guide before your first order — but it runs small consistently, which is a thing you can correct for.
Temu’s apparel inherits the marketplace problem. Sizing is set by whichever supplier listed the item, review photos may be of a different batch, and there is no house standard to calibrate against. It is fine for a single novelty piece. It is a poor way to buy clothes you intend to wear for a season.
Everything that is not clothing: Temu
Phone accessories, kitchen gadgets, storage, craft supplies, garden tools, cable organisers, the small plastic solutions to small domestic annoyances — Temu simply has more of it and prices it lower. SHEIN has expanded into home and electronics, but it is a fashion company doing adjacency, and the depth shows.
There is one caveat worth taking seriously, and it applies to both. Independent testing of cheap imported goods has repeatedly turned up problems in specific categories: Seoul’s municipal government ran seven rounds of testing on children’s products bought from these platforms across 2024 and found harmful substances in a substantial share of them, including phthalate levels in footwear many multiples above the permitted limit. Greenpeace testing on apparel samples found a minority exceeding EU chemical limits.
The sensible reading is category-specific rather than platform-specific: be cautious with anything for infants, anything that spends long periods against skin, faux leather, and soft plastics. That is true whichever of the two you are on.
Returns, side by side
SHEIN’s process is more structured and slower. The first return from an order is free and can hold multiple items, additional returns from the same order carry a fee taken out of the refund, and the window runs from delivery. Because SHEIN owns the transaction, one ticket resolves it. There are physical drop-off options in the US through its returns partner as well as USPS.
Temu’s returns are generally easier to start and can involve a seller in the middle. The upside is leniency; the downside is that when a seller disputes, you are waiting on a third party the platform does not employ.
Neither is a nightmare. SHEIN is more predictable if you return often; Temu is friendlier on a one-off.
Tracking and delivery
Both quote roughly one to three weeks on standard service for anything moving internationally, and both are meaningfully faster on the items already sitting in a domestic warehouse. SHEIN has been building that domestic capacity hard — it opened a 737,000 square foot facility in Indiana in September 2026 — and its tracking is the more granular of the two.
If speed is the deciding factor, filter for locally warehoused stock on either platform and ignore the headline delivery estimate, which is calculated for the slow path.
So which one
Use both, for different things. The mistake is treating them as interchangeable and then being annoyed that the Temu blazer fits like a costume or that the SHEIN drawer organiser cost twice what it should have.
If you only want one account: SHEIN, on the grounds that clothing is the category where getting it wrong costs the most and where a published measurement chart is worth real money.
